Community Helpers Activity – Happy Labor Day!

Community Worker guided reading lesson

Ahhh…Labor Day! For some teachers it’s the last hurrah of summer; however, for others who are already back to school, it’s the first official holiday of the academic year. Either way, we’ll take it! This all-American holiday is an opportunity to step away from lesson planning and take a few steps into a pool, the ocean or onto a nearby hiking trail. The point of Labor Day is not just to relax and enjoy time with family and friends; it’s also a time to celebrate the everyday laborers and hard working heroes who keep America running. The month of September is a great time to teach the kiddos in your classroom about communities and the importance of community workers. I want to talk about a fun and engaging community workers lesson plan you can teach. Enjoy!

While we’re on the subject, Happy Labor Day to YOU! Of all the community helpers who work hard to serve the citizens of our cities, towns and communities, teachers are among the most important. However, they’re often the most overlooked. As a teacher AND a mom, I applaud you. I’ve been where you are, and I know how hard you work every day. In an earlier post I talked about the importance of teachers as community helpers. Here’s a link for you to check out my Guided Reading Superhero post in which I celebrate teachers and the many ways they serve.

“All labor that uplifts humanity has dignity and should be undertaken with painstaking excellence.”

Community Helpers Activity

As for how you can teach the kiddos in your classroom about the importance of community helpers, don’t sweat it. I can help. If you’re like me, you believe there’s dignity in hard work and there are lessons we can learn from those who serve us. That’s why it’s so important to teach children to recognize and appreciate all that these humble heroes do to help keep us safe and well. But Labor Day is not the only time you can teach this topic. In fact, it’s a lesson plan that will engage and excite the students in your classroom at any time of year! Your kiddos will LOVE learning about the interesting and essential jobs performed by community helpers. From firefighters and police officers to doctors and construction workers, this lesson plan is packed with information and learning opportunities!
